Joel Brier Joel Brier began his journey as a career firefighter in 1983 in a Fire Department in West Palm Beach; this department and nine others consolidated to form Palm Beach County Fire Rescue in 1984. In mid 1985, he ran and was elected to the position of District Vice President for the Professional Firefighters/Paramedics of Palm Beach County, IAFF Local 2928. This organization represents the employees of Palm Beach County Fire Rescue and several municipalities, including its First Responders, Dispatchers and support staff. Within his duties, Joel found it necessary to become involved in the Professional Firefighters’ Wellness Program in order to best represent his members and ensure that they were able to effectively do their jobs. In 1998 Joel became the 2nd Executive Vice President of the organization, and began functioning as a liaison between the Local, the Department and its Employee Assistance Program (EAP) providers. It was during this time that he began to assist his members and their families with addiction counseling, interventions and treatment service referrals. He has assisted the Local in building an expansive resource network and has helped raise awareness by teaching Recognition, Reasonable Suspicion, and helping to facilitate fair drug testing practices. Today, Joel continues to enjoy his career as an advocate for his members, as well as being a Board Certified Addiction Counselor. Joel is also UMBC certified in Crisis Intervention and Suicide prevention. His first hand experience representing employees in six departments, a thirty two year career as a firefighter, and his numerous certifications, has made him a leading authority on substance and alcohol abuse in Firefighters and other First Responders in the South Florida area.
